Language dictionaries define perseverance, persistence in doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success, (and perseverance is the ability of a person to continue in a certain work, despite many mental and physical hardships, and despite what the work may cause by its nature of distress and boredom), and perseverance does not depend on the type of work that a person performs, but on the person himself, so if we see him continuing in his work with the same seriousness and interest, then it develops towards the best, we describe it as perseverance, and perseverance is a constant characteristic in the adult individual, but in children it can shake at any time as a result of the intervention of several factors, and Many external temptations in the work he does.
We are not born with perseverance. It is a habit that we acquire, it is entrenched in our souls, or it is not entrenched, like many of the habits established in our behavior.
Perseverance does not necessarily mean continuity and steadfastness in any work entrusted to the perseverant. Perseverance in physical actions may not be the same in mental work. The traditional theory that says - perseverance in work means perseverance in everything - is an exaggerated theory of optimism and does not have a great deal of validity.
The relationship between perseverance and success:
The relationship between perseverance and success is positive, and the matter is different for people with average intelligence, as we may not find a correlation between intelligence and perseverance. But the intelligent person does not necessarily have to be persistent, for he may have a bright mind, while at the same time he has little perseverance, or he may be of average intelligence and a lot of perseverance, but perseverance compensates for a large part of intelligence.
In work that requires speed in performance, intelligent people excel, but in work that requires effort and time, the persevering ones are distinguished. For this reason, it is said: The intelligent people often dislike routine work and consider it boring.
(And if a person has a large amount of perseverance, and a large amount of quick intelligence, then here is a fertile soil for genius).
There are two basic pillars without which the trait of perseverance cannot stand, and they are:
- continue working
-Direction towards a specific goal.
How do we instill the characteristic of perseverance in the hearts of children?
A- We set a goal close to the children, and we ask them to reach it, on the condition that some effort is spent on it, so it is not easy to reach in order for the child to feel the pleasure of achieving it.
B- Dividing the goal into smaller goals, some short term and others long term. This creates new incentives for the child, a desire to earn more, and achieve the largest number of goals.
C- Banishing side goals that have nothing to do with the topic, which sidetrack his attention and dissipate his energy. The application of this issue requires a degree of awareness, Objectivity, accuracy in addition to wisdom in the method and quality of selecting appropriate educational goals to train the child to persevere.
