You need to rekindle the warmth and enthusiasm of your old relationships and take advantage of opportunities at work or with your neighbors to expand your friendship base. People need to feel like they're part of something bigger, that they care about others, and that others care about them.
Andy didn't know his neighbors and would turn away if he saw them in the building's yard. What he saw, however, were high walls and closed doors.
A few years ago, Andy bought a computer to use for his job. One day, while fiddling with the computer, he found himself surfing the internet. Andy visited several sites where people with common interests in books, sports, or literature were queuing to discuss their hobbies.
He engaged in a conversation with one particular person during his computer journey and quickly discovered that they had a lot in common and thoroughly enjoyed talking to him (even though the conversation was over the computer).
Several weeks later, while chatting via computer with this new friend, Andy's house experienced a power outage, shutting down the computer and cutting off the connection with his friend.
When the power was restored, Andy looked for his friend only to find that his friend had also been disconnected due to the power outage.
Skeptical about this coincidence, Andy and his friend decided to reveal their locations. Of all the places in the world they could have been, it turned out that Andy and his friend lived on the same street.
When the power went out on the street, it cut off the power to their homes, which were only a few houses apart. We know that computers can connect people on different continents.
Thus, Andy learned that there are wonderful people out there, too, if only he had the opportunity to get to know them.
Warm relationships are more valuable than personal satisfaction. In other words, a person's overall outlook on the world is the most important factor in happiness. If you feel close to others, you will feel four times better about yourself than if you were not close to anyone.
