Intermediary Filaments-Vimentin Filaments
Vimentin is the intermediary filament protein, which occurs in fibroblasts and endothelial cells as well as in other nonmuscle mesenchymal cells. This figure shows vimentin filaments in cytokeratin-negative endothelial cells in tissue culture after their isolation from bovine aorta. Vimentin in these cells was traced by immunohistochemistry. The vimentin antibody was labeled with the fluorescent dye rhodamine. Bundles of vimentin filaments were shown to envelop part of the cell nuclei.
