А voltmeter is a high resistance galvanometer and hence takes so little current that it does not materially change the difference of potential of the points it connects. It is for this reason that a voltmeter will indicate nearly the E. M. F. of a cell 1). In measuring the difference of potential between the points in a circuit, the voltmeter is connected with them in parallel.
