Make your friendships unconditional

I know from experience that people in good relationships tend to think the best of others most of the time.

Until proven otherwise, I recommend that you assume the good intentions of others. In Australia we have always followed the philosophy, it is far better to be proven wrong now and then that you were wrong, or that someone has used or abused you, than to live your life with those unpleasant feelings that come with constantly distrusting others.

And when you have skeptical or negative thoughts about a friend, you should resist them by thinking of something opposite to them. Think best of that person. Let all your dealings begin with a degree of unconditional positivity and make this an integral part of all your relationships. When you do this, you will enjoy more positivity in all the relationships you build.

Determine the purpose of your relationships

This may seem obvious, but sometimes we take the simple things in life for granted. But the way you deal with those simple things is, to a large extent, what makes the difference between those who enjoy happiness and success and those who do not.

Every interaction that takes place within every relationship has a purpose. This purpose will differ each time. Think, for example, of the purpose of a meeting at work versus the purpose of a discussion with a friend over coffee.

The purpose of meeting a friend for coffee may simply be to know each other's news regarding your life on a personal and social level, while the purpose of a work-related meeting may be to achieve some results that will bring you closer to your desired goal. Since the purpose of each scenario is completely different, your approach to each interaction must be completely different as well. You have to adapt your behavior to the relationship you are in.

The next time you are going to engage in a conversation or interact with someone in any context, ask yourself: What is the purpose of this conversation and how can I best achieve what I want? If you want to form a close, friendly relationship with your partner, you will need to emphasize these traits the next time you sit down to eat with him. Be friendly, open and honest. Your behavior here will be very different from your behavior in the context of a business lunch, where you may want to talk briefly and show through your body language that you are confident and show how prepared and ready you are for work.
