recoverability (n.)

A term used in SYNTACTIC theory to refer to sentences where elements which have been ELIDED (or DELETED) are capable of being retrieved (are recoverable), by taking the linguistic CONTEXT into account. In later GENERATIVE GRAMMAR, it refers to a CONDITION governing the application of DELETION RULES, which specifies that only elements which do not have SEMANTIC content can be deleted.
