metadiscourse (n.)

A term used in the study of DISCOURSE for those features in the organization or presentation of a text which help the reader to interpret or evaluate its content. They include features of textual organization (e.g. headings, spacing, and connectives such as first and next) as well as such interpersonal elements as HEDGES (perhaps), attitude markers (frankly), and dialogue features.
