echo (n.)

A term used in some GRAMMATICAL descriptions, notably QUIRK GRAMMAR, to refer to a type of SENTENCE which repeats, in whole or in part, what has just been said by another speaker. Such echo utterances include ‘echo QUESTIONS’ (e.g. A: I saw a ghost. B: You saw what?) and EXCLAMATIONS (e.g. A: Have you been to the office? B: Have I been to the office!). Questions which do not echo in this way are sometimes referred to as non-echo questions.
