Elision of final nasals

Wood notes that final nasals may be elided, leaving behind nasalization of the preceding vowel, e.g. plan , exciting . His data indicate that a further change may occur involving loss of nasalization, producing a purely oral vowel. These processes, combined with cluster reduction, are seen in Wood’s example don’t [dəʊ]. Nasalization with loss of nasal is characteristic of Afrikaans, with further denasalisation characteristic of CVA.
