wide (adj.)

A term used in the description of types of VOWEL, referring to a vowel which is articulated with greater PHARYNX width than another with the same TONGUE and lip configuration; it is opposed to narrow. The effect is achieved by drawing the root of the tongue forward and lowering the LARYNX. Twi and Akan (West Africa) use a contrast of this kind.
