poetics (n.)
A term used in LINGUISTICS to refer to the application of linguistic theory and method to the analysis of poetry. However, some linguists (such as Roman Jakobson) have given the term a broader interpretation, including within the ‘poetic function’ of LANGUAGE any aesthetic or creative linguistic use of the spoken or written MEDIUM.
