ideophone (n.)

A term sometimes used in LINGUISTICS and PHONETICS for any vivid (ideophonic) representation of an idea in sound, such as occurs through onomatopoeia. In Bantu linguistics, it is the name of a particular WORD-CLASS containing SOUND-SYMBOLIC words, often accompanied by such EXTRALINGUISTIC (or ‘mimetic’) effects as whistles or clapping.
