homophony (n.)

A term used in SEMANTIC analysis to refer to WORDS (i.e. LEXEMES) which have the same pronunciation, but differ in MEANING. Homophones are a type of HOMONYMY. Homophony is illustrated from such pairs as threw/through and rode/rowed. When there is AMBIGUITY on account of this identity, a homophonic clash or conflict is said to have occurred.
