graphic substance

A term used by some LINGUISTS to refer to the written or printed form of LANGUAGE seen as a set of physically definable visual properties, i.e. marks on a surface. The analogous term for speech is PHONIC SUBSTANCE. The linguistic analysis of these graphic or GRAPHETIC features is sometimes referred to as GRAPHOLOGY, on analogy with PHONOLOGY.
