final (adj.)

The usual way of referring to the last ELEMENT in a LINGUISTIC UNIT, especially in PHONOLOGY; sometimes abbreviated as F in such contexts as FV (= ‘final vowel’). For example, the PHONEME /t/ occurs ‘in final position’ (or ‘finally’) in the WORD cat; the MORPHEME of plurality occurs in final position in English words. Other positions are referred to as INITIAL and MEDIAL.
