faithfulness (n.) (FAITH)

In OPTIMALITY THEORY, the degree to which one form (typically the OUTPUT) preserves the properties of another form (typically the INPUT). Faithfulness CONSTRAINTS penalize differences between the input and output REPRESENTATIONS. A set of abbreviatory conventions indicate the type of constraint, such as FAITHC (faithfulness of CONSONANTS between output and input) and FAITHV (faithfulness of VOWELS).
