drum language

In LINGUISTICS, a term used to characterize a type of LANGUAGE in which a drum is used to simulate selected features of speech (primarily, TONES and RHYTHMS). The signals consist mainly of short, FORMULAIC utterances, but are used to build up quite elaborate systems of communication, especially in Africa, both within villages and between communities.
