capacity (n.)

A term used in GENERATIVE linguistics to refer to the generative POWER of GRAMMARS. If a series of grammars generates an identical set of STRINGS (SENTENCES), they are said to have the same weak generative capacity. If in addition they assign the same STRUCTURAL DESCRIPTIONS to these strings, then they have the same strong generative capacity.
