GOODNESS OF FIT
A categorisation based upon the best available match rather than an exact one. The term is particularly used in Prototype Theory, which proposes that the ease with which real-world objects are associated with a lexical category (BIRD, FURNITURE, FRUIT) is deter mined by the closeness of their match to a central prototype and/or by how many of the characterising features of the category they possess.
The term is also used in theories of phonological representation. The intelligibility of the speech signal is often reduced by, for example, external noise, Slips of the Tongue or the unfamiliarity of the speaker’s voice. The only way we can explain our ability to match strings of sounds to words in our lexicon is to assume a probabilistic system of matching which does not demand a precise match but accepts the best-fitting one.
