Al-Mufid narrated in Al-Majalis, through a reliable chain of transmission, from Ubayd Allah ibn al-Abbas, who related to Abu Ja‘far Muhammad ibn Ali (peace be upon him), saying:
“I heard Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri say: The final sermon that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) delivered to us was the sermon he gave during the illness in which he passed away. He came out leaning on Ali ibn Abi Talib and Maymunah, his wife, and then sat on the pulpit.
He said:
‘O people, I am leaving among you the Thaqalayn )Two Weighty Things(.’
He fell silent. A man stood up and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, what are these Two Weighty Things?’
He became angry until his face reddened. Then he calmed down and said:
‘I did not mention them except because I wanted to tell you about them. But I was overcome with emotion and could not do so. One end is in the hand of Allah, and the other end is in your hands, so hold firmly to it and act according to it. They are the Qur’an and the lesser weighty thing, my Ahl al-Bayt.’
Then he said:
‘By Allah, I say this while there are men still in the loins of the people of polytheism who are more hopeful in my sight than many of you.’
Then he said:
‘By Allah, no servant loves them except that Allah will grant him light on the Day of Resurrection until he reaches me at the Pool, and no servant hates them except that Allah will prevent him from reaching me on the Day of Resurrection.’
Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him) then said:
‘Indeed, Abu Abdullah brings us what we recognize.’
