During the initial years following the migration (hijra) to Medina, a contingent of Jews approached the Prophet (s) and declared their embrace of Islam. They inquired of the Prophet (s) regarding his successor and said, “O Messenger of Allah! Who will be your successor and our guardian after you?” In response to their question, the following verse was revealed: “Your guardian is only Allah, His Apostle, and the faithful who maintain the prayer and give the zakat while bowing down” (Q 5:55). As they accompanied the Prophet (s) to the mosque, they witnessed a destitute man departing from the premises. The Prophet (s) inquired, “Did anyone assist you?” The man replied, “Yes, I was given this ring (khatam).” The Prophet (s) asked, “Who donated it to you?” The man responded, “The man who was engrossed in prayer inside the mosque.” Curious, the Prophet (s) asked, “In what position was he when he helped you?” The man replied, “He assisted me while he was in the posture of rukuʿ (bowing).” Upon hearing this account, the Prophet (s) recited the chant of takbir (“Allah akbar”), and those present around him joined in the chant. Ḥassan ibn Thabit crafted a poem commemorating the event.
