Courage in the Battle of Badr
3:31:28 2026-08-31 322

In Rabi I 2/September 623, during the First Battle of Badr (Badr al-ula), the Prophet (s) pursued Kurz ibn Jabir al-Fihri, who had raided the herds of Medina. During this significant event, Ali (a) held the banner of the Prophet’s army. In 2/623, Ali (a) participated in the Battle of Dhat al-Ashira. It was during this battle that the Prophet (s) bestowed upon him the teknonym “Abu Turab” and prophesied that he would be martyred at the hands of the most wicked individual.

On the 17th of Ramadan 2/March 17, 624, Ali (a) played a vital role in the Battle of Badr. He was one of the flag-bearers of the Islamic army. On the journey to the Badr area, Ali (a) held a black flag or banner in his hand, notable for a distinctive tuft of white hair. Together with the Prophet (s) and Marthad ibn Abi Marthad al-Ghanawi, they took turns riding a camel.

On the eve of the Battle of Badr, the Prophet (s) addressed his companions, asking, “Who will fetch water for us?” In the face of fear and silence, it was Ali ibn Abi Talib (a) who stepped forward, volunteering for the task. In the cover of the pitch-black night, he made his way to a deep well, descended into it, and provided water to the weary army. According to certain accounts of the event, it is believed that during that time, Allah commanded the angels to descend upon the earth and convey greetings and peace to Ali (a).

When the Muslim army reached Badr, Muhammad (s) dispatched Ali (a), accompanied by al-Zubayr Ibn al-Awwam and Sad ibn Abi Waqqas, for an overnight reconnaissance mission to gather intelligence on the Quraysh army. At the beginning of the battle, Utba ibn Rabia, Shayba ibn Rabia, and al-Walid ibn Utba issued challenges to engage in one-on-one combat with Muslim warriors. In response to Muhammad’s command, Ali (a), Hamza ibn Abd al-Muttalib (a), and Ubayda ibn al-Harith stepped forward to confront them. Ali (a) and Hamza (a) defeated their opponents in combat. Hamza vanquished al-Walid, while Ali (a) emerged victorious against Utba. Upon realizing that Ubayda had sustained injuries, they killed Shayba as well. Furthermore, Ali (a) was also responsible for the elimination of several other individuals during the Battle of Badr. According to various reports, Ali ibn Abi Talib (a) displayed such extraordinary courage and gallantry in the midst of the battle that the polytheists bestowed upon him the nickname “the red death” (al-mawt al-aḥmar).
