Little things with big meanings

Little things... The tone of your voice, the words you use in ordinary events say a lot.

Do little things, like a slight change in your facial expression, really matter?

Human beings don’t inflate like a puffer fish, or change color like a chameleon, and our reactions show up in more subtle features, in vocal tones, and in body language.

Consider this: It takes less than a sixth of a second to recognize a person’s facial expression, and we can see expressions from 100 yards away. How is this possible? It’s all about attention. People are used to seeing facial features as an indicator of what their companions are thinking. Because we think these features are important, they grab our attention, which leads us to react to them. And so these

expressions become important in our communications.

Someone asks you if you liked the dinner they made for you, and you say, “It was good.” You have to remember that the other person is paying attention, not just to the words you say, but to the other messages those words may convey.

Couples who exhibit sensitivity in communication, who recognize the strength of ambiguous changes in behavior, rate their satisfaction and contentment 17% higher than those who do not recognize the strength of ambiguous changes.
