Coffee without sugar can help you lose weight

A new study claims that adding an extra cup of coffee to your daily routine may lead to a slight weight loss over 4 years.

She noted that consuming an additional cup of unsweetened coffee was associated with a weight loss of a quarter of a pound (0.12 kilograms) over a period of 4 years.

Researchers from Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts, based the results of their study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, on data from 3 previous large-scale studies, in which participants answered questionnaires about the food and drink they eat during the day, in addition to recording their weight.

The researchers compared the participants' coffee consumption habits and their weight changes over 4-year increments.

They focused their research on caffeinated and decaf coffee consumption, and considered whether people added sugar, non-sweeteners or creamer to their drinks.

Scientists found that an additional cup of unsweetened coffee per day was associated with a loss of 0.26 pounds, or 0.12 kilograms, over 4 years.

However, if participants increased their daily intake by just a teaspoon of sugar, they would have gained 0.20 pounds (0.09 kg) over the same period.

One of the surprises of the study was that using “creamy or dairy-free coffee creamer” had no effect on weight.

They suggested that “added sugar may eliminate the weight loss associated with coffee, because it can be a source of additional calories, while cream or sweetener may contribute to a feeling of fullness, because it contains protein or fat.”

The study authors concluded that their findings could provide an effective weight management strategy, especially for overweight and obese individuals, especially since the observed weight gain due to sugar consumption was more pronounced in these participants.
