A new scientific study advises adopting an uncommon position when measuring blood pressure, in order to obtain a more accurate result.
The study, which was presented at the 2023 Scientific Sessions on High Blood Pressure, organized by the American Heart Association, indicates that measuring blood pressure while lying on your back, and not sitting upright in a chair as is common, leads to accurate reading results.
The authors of the study explained that the human involuntary nervous system regulates blood pressure when it is in different positions, but gravity may cause blood to pool in a sitting or upright position, and the body is sometimes unable to regulate blood pressure when it is lying down or sitting. Or standing, which may lead to imbalance of numbers.
The study shows: "If we rely only on the sitting blood pressure that we normally measure, we may miss people who have higher resting blood pressure, because there can be this drop when they sit or stand."
“People usually feel more relaxed when they lie down, because that's associated with sleep and relaxation,” explains Jennifer Wong, a board-certified cardiologist and medical director of cardiology at MemorialCare Heart and Vascular Institute at Orange Coast Medical Center in Fountain Valley, California. This can give a good gauge of their blood pressure when it is at its lowest.
She added: "It is important to check for high blood pressure when we are resting."
The American Heart Association currently recommends measuring blood pressure while sitting in a chair, with both feet on the floor, and there is no indication that the organization plans to change these recommendations based on the results of this study.
