Researchers improve mathematical skills of people

Brain stimulation can help people who have problems understanding math get better at arithmetic.

The researchers gave 102 people a series of challenging arithmetic problems, each of which involved multiplying a two-digit number by a one-digit number, such as 16 x 3 = 48.

Half of the subjects in the study were electrocuted with a mild electric current to stimulate brain cells.

The researchers claim that people who were subjected to brain stimulation, who were also tested under more challenging learning conditions, answered the questions in about half the time, compared to people whose brains were not stimulated.

They reportedly got answers 52% faster. But the technique only worked for people who had low brain cell activity in a region of their brain called the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex when they tried to solve math problems.

Previous research suggests that these are the people who struggle with mathematics.

This suggests that delivering an electrical current to the brain can help people who do poorly at math improve, but it may not provide a boost for those who are already good at math.

Roy Cohen Kadosh, lead author of the study and Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience at the University of Surrey, said: "What we found is how this promising neurostimulation works and under what conditions the stimulation protocol is most effective. This discovery could pave the way for a more appropriate approach in a person's learning journey."

It has been shown previously that electrical stimulation can enhance memory and learning.

But the new study aims to understand how this works, for whom, and in what learning settings.

The study, published in the journal PLOS Biology, suggests that people need to be less than excellent at math, and also be challenged with math problems, to benefit from stimulating their brains.
