A strange experiment on mice for rejuvenation and anti-aging
2:32:27 2023-08-23 1023

Researchers from the United States and Russia connected the circulatory systems of young and old mice for a full 12 weeks, which slowed cellular aging in older animals.

The study expands on previous research showing that there are components in the blood of young mammals that are worth investigating for health and anti-aging benefits.

Aside from the huge biological jump between mice and humans, there are many known and severe risks associated with such treatments for the recipient, not to mention the questionable ethics of donation.

Moreover, twelve weeks in a mouse can equate to up to eight years in a person — a rather impractical amount of time for a human to be physically attached to another.

"Is it proteins or metabolites? Is it new cells provided by the baby mouse, or is the baby mouse simply stockpiling old blood that supports aging?" James White, a cell biologist at Duke University, explains.

To find out, Harvard geneticist Bohan Zhang and his colleagues recruited the circulatory systems of pairs of young mice (3 months old), pairs of old mice (2 years old), and pairs consisting of an old mouse and a young mouse and compared the results.

Tests revealed that older mice that received young mouse blood had higher concentrations of regulatory compounds such as carboxylic acid, evidence of chemical processes normally disrupted by aging, increased mitochondrial production, reduced inflammation, and increased expression of genes associated with aging.

"This effect is associated with a longer lifespan, improved physiological parameters, an upregulated genetic system and a renewed cellular protein," the team explained in their paper, stressing that the three-month blood circulation engagement was significantly more effective than the short-term blood engagement, those previously studied (five weeks).
