Scientists reveal a drug that restores tooth growth after it is broken or damaged

Doctors are studying what could become a revolution in the field of dentistry, studying a drug that regrows teeth, and doctors develop a drug that provides a glimmer of hope for the millions of people who live with replacement teeth.

Teeth don't grow back once we're adults, any wear or tear is permanent, which is why it's important to keep them as clean and healthy as possible.

However, this is something scientists are now looking to change. It has been announced that clinical trials for a potential tooth regrowth treatment are set to begin in July 2024. If successful, therapeutic drugs could be available by 2030.

A team from the Medical Research Institute at Kitano Hospital in Japan is responsible for the trial targeting people with hypodontia, a rare genetic condition that prevents baby and adult teeth from developing normally.

Initially targeted at young children with the condition, the treatment, researchers believe, could also be used more widely in people with more common dental problems, such as gum disease.

"The idea of growing new teeth is every dentist's dream. I've been working on this since I was a graduate student. I was confident that I would be able to make it happen," said Katsuo Takahashi, Chief of the Department of Dental Medicine and Oral Surgery at Kitano Hospital.

And according to the magazine "Sciencealert", after doctors found a link between a specific gene called "USAG-1" that is able to stimulate tooth growth in mice. Doctors have discovered an antibody that can safely block USAG-1 activity in mice and rodents without causing any side effects, stimulating tooth growth.

It is being studied if the same chemical reactions can be controlled in humans. "Treatment with anti-USAG-1 antibodies in mice is effective for tooth regeneration and could be a breakthrough in the treatment of dental abnormalities in humans," the researchers said.
