Superfood against diabetes and obesity

A team of scientists has made a case for giving pecans "superfood" status, as a new study reveals that pecans have some surprising strengths. Researchers from the United States and Mexico have found that consuming pecans, whose scientific name is Carya illinoinensis, can successfully mitigate the health effects of a high-fat diet, increase the body's energy expenditure, reduce an imbalance in the gut that can lead to many unpleasant digestion problems, and combat Inflammation, according to what was published by the New Atlas, citing the MDPI journal.

Researchers conducted an 18-week study in lab rats, with one group on a high-fat diet given whole pecans, and another on a similar diet but with pecan extract polyphenols.

Lowering of cholesterol and insulin

Eating both whole pecans and the supplement resulted in dramatic decreases in fat mass, blood cholesterol, and insulin.

Reduce liver fat

Nuts enhanced the metabolic activity in brown adipose tissue and reduced the fat content in the liver, especially as the imbalance in metabolism and hepatic fat accumulation play a large role in chronic conditions such as fatty liver disease.

Luis Cisneros Zevalos, professor of horticulture and food sciences in Texas, said: “The numbers of patients with obesity and diabetes are increasing in modern society all over the world, as a result of the trend to consume a high-fat diet, which is one of the main reasons besides lifestyle and genetic predisposition,” noting that "Pecan can be a safe health tool in the hands of consumers."

Fatty acids and vitamins

Pecans are already known to be high in polyunsaturated fatty acids and heart-healthy fiber, as well as vitamins E, A and some B vitamins, potassium, phosphorous, magnesium, calcium and zinc. This research joins a growing body of work focused on the health benefits of nuts.

While more research is needed, the scientists believe the mouse model reflects human metabolism.

The study indicates that a person, who weighs 59 kg, should eat 22-25 half pecans, or 21.6-36 grams of defatted pecan flour per day. There are about 196 calories in 20 pecan halves.
