Experts from the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology (EMPA) have created a design for a very light drone that can fly and swim.

According to a statement posted on the Swiss government website, the creators plan to use the SailMAV drone specifically to monitor the behavior of waterfowl.

A source in the federal laboratories says: “Thanks to its foldable wings, the SailMAV can fly and move in the water. Its special design allows recording the behavior of wild animals, as they are not seen as strange.”

The research center confirmed that the drone is “able to move in the water silently” and collect “data on biodiversity in an alpine lake or in an Arctic fjord.”

The statement indicates that the drone can, within two seconds, fold its side wings consisting of three pieces. This drone weighs 520 grams and has a wingspan of one meter. The robot consists of polymer foam with a carbon shell 0.1 millimeter thick and covered with a layer of waterproof nanoparticles.
