Know your strengths as a parent

When my eldest son was still a little boy, I was always jealous when I saw other parents spending hours playing ball with their children, when I could only do so for a few minutes without enthusiasm; It didn't suit me.

There was also that friend who built a beautiful wooden house for his children on top of a tree in his garden (Why can't we have a house on top of a tree like this, dad?) There was also that mother who was creative in creating attractive adventures for her children to play.

You may have understood my point now; I've been focusing on what other parents can do, forgetting the fact that there are so many things I can do that they can't — things I take for granted, but are really valuable.

For example, I love to read to my children, and since I am an open-minded person I used to enjoy spending many hours reading stories to my children, mimicking all the voices and accents, imitating the characters, as well as the dramatic effects associated with the atmosphere of the story. All this seemed very natural to me until I realized that this is a skill as valuable as building a tree house or playing ball.

In those few times that I was playing with my children, it was clear that I did it for nothing but because I feel that I should do it, and this is not a new reason, and although it is a sufficient reason, I, for example, will not be like the father who was radiating enthusiasm while playing ball with his children. However, this father may not be able to tell his children a story like I do, or cook them a pasta meal like the one I cook for my children.

The point here is that parents who follow the rules of sound education realize their strengths, and this does not mean giving up doing other things, but rather focusing on our strengths; If you can't play football, maybe you can read stories to your kids, make them delicious baked goods, maybe be patient with them while they learn how to fix a car, or maybe share their enthusiasm and interest in the Star Wars series or motorcycles (I know one has to working hard to achieve exactly this).

It is important to know what you are trying hard to do, and to truly believe in your strengths, so that you will be able to watch other parents do things that you cannot do without feeling embarrassed. Anyway, you and I know that these parents can't do everything; So whenever you feel jealousy creeping into your heart, stop and remind yourself of what you are good at doing.

Parents who follow the rules of sound education realize their strengths, and this does not mean giving up doing other things, but it means focusing on our strengths.
