Keeping a daily diary helps seniors ward off dementia

A study confirms that keeping a diary - or a journal - can also help older people ward off dementia.

The researchers analyzed data from 10,000 people living in Australia over the age of 70 who were followed for about 10 years.

They discovered that those who engaged in more activities such as keeping a journal, writing letters or using a computer were 11% less likely to develop dementia.

Meanwhile, mentally active activities such as playing games, cards, chess, crossword puzzles or puzzles were associated with a 9% reduction in risk.

The researchers also found that artistic activities such as woodworking, metalwork, and painting, and passive mental activities such as reading newspapers or listening to music, led to a 7% lower risk of developing the disease.

On the other hand, they discovered that outings and social interactions did not seem to have any effect.

Writing in the journal Jama Network Open, from Monash University in Melbourne, the team said: 'These findings suggest that participation in creative arts and mentally active activities may help reduce the risk of dementia in later life. For older people, lifestyle enrichment may be particularly important. "Because it can help prevent dementia by making adjustments to daily routines. It may confer cognitive benefits by stimulating the growth of neurons and synapses and promoting well-being."

The team added that their findings may help guide aged care policies and interventions aimed at preventing dementia for older adults.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), around 50 million people have dementia globally, and there are approximately 10 million new cases each year.

A 2021 study estimated that global dementia cases would nearly triple to more than 152 million by 2050, driven by an aging population.

Experts from the University of Washington said the highest increase in dementia prevalence is expected in eastern sub-Saharan Africa, North Africa and the Middle East.
