Fasting isn't just staying away from food, The purpose of fasting is to develop the quality of Taqwa (consciousness of Allah), righteousness both inwardly and outwardly, by abstaining from sinful deeds and training ourselves to control our thoughts and desires for the sake of pleasing Allah. Fasting is a deeply spiritual practice that is meant to benefit us in mind, heart and body.

Our Salah (prayer), dua (supplication), adhkaar (remembering Allah by praising & glorifying him), tauba(repentance), Quran recitation etc are all forms of Worship. But the deeds that carry the greatest rewards are the obligatory deeds which we should focus on perfecting first and foremost before everything else.
